About the Photographers
The Photo Lab is managed by Garrett Speed and Onno Tijsma, both employees of the faculty of Geosciences.
Garrett Speed
Garrett is a data steward for the data team in the faculty of Geosciences. Garrett has a background in GIS, remote sensing, archaeology, and programming, and he has been taking photographs since the 1990s. He has previously worked with archaeologists to photograph sites and artifacts, map sites with drone photography and photogrammetry, model artifacts with photogrammetry, and to capture surface details with reflectance transformation imaging. In his remote sensing training he has worked with satellite imagery to classify and analyze multi- and hyper-spectral imagery. Garrett has been with Utrecht University for four years, and through his assistance with a PhD student to capture details of whale teeth, the Photo Lab was created.
In his free time now Garrett enjoys photographing landscapes, trains, wildlife, and making 3D models of the environment.
Onno Tijsma
Onno is the facility coordinator for the Earth Simulation Laboratory. Up until the covid epidemic he worked as a professional photographer for advertising agencies, companies and brands like Rijkswaterstaat, KPMG, BMW and Bosch. From the age of sixteen he took pictures at rock concerts and photographed artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed etc. This persuaded him to choose photography over studying paleontology after high school.
In his spare time Onno enjoys travelling, art and fine dining.
